Keeneland. For three-years olds. (1 1/8 miles, dirt)
The 2024 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, held on April 6 at Keeneland Race Course, delivered a standout performance by Sierra Leone, who solidified his status as a leading contender for the Kentucky Derby. Despite initial reluctance at the starting gate, Sierra Leone, trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, showcased his exceptional closing speed. He surged from ninth place to overtake Just a Touch in the final stretch, winning the 1 1/8-mile race by 1½ lengths with a final time of 1:50.08. This victory earned Sierra Leone 100 qualifying points, placing him at the top of the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with a total of 155 points.
The race featured a competitive field of ten three-year-olds, with Just a Touch finishing second and longshot Epic Ride securing third place. Notably, Dornoch, a rival from the Remsen Stakes, finished fourth. Sierra Leone’s impressive performance, especially his ability to pass three horses in the final furlong, highlighted his potential for the longer distance of the Kentucky Derby. Jockey Tyler Gaffalione praised the colt’s effortless acceleration, noting that they have yet to reach his full potential. This victory not only added to Chad Brown’s accolades but also set high expectations for Sierra Leone’s performance in the upcoming Triple Crown races.
