On Saturday, July 12 at Saratoga, Irish-bred Excellent Truth delivered a thrilling performance to narrowly defeat the tenacious She Feels Pretty in the prestigious Diana Stakes (G1T), contested at 1 1/8 miles on the turf. The $485,000 event gathered some of the top fillies and mares in training, and marked a historic tenth win in the race for trainer Chad Brown, his fourth consecutive and ninth in the past ten years.
Ridden expertly by Flavien Prat, Excellent Truth tracked the pace set by Choisya before engaging in a dramatic stretch battle with She Feels Pretty, who briefly gained the lead. Digging in with grit, the daughter of Cotai Glory fought back to prevail by a head in 1:47.37 over a course rated “good” following heavy rains.
Owner John Stewart, who had invested significantly in acquiring European fillies adept on softer turf, called the win a validation of his vision. Meanwhile, Brown paid tribute to his late mentor Bobby Frankel, saying, “It’s his system we’re still using.”
She Feels Pretty, who was spotting the winner four pounds, lost no stature in defeat with a gallant runner-up effort, while Dynamic Pricing, another Brown trainee, finished third, 4 ½ lengths behind.
